Brisbane Girls Grammar School first entered the International Young Physicists' Tournament in 1998. In 2002, they subsequently launched a challenge to others schools to compete for the right to represent Australia at IYPT.

The IYPT Australia Challenge was born and so far students from six schools have won the right to represent their country.

In 2008 it was decided to establish a Not-for-profit Association to run the event into the future. AuScience was established and is developing other ways that students can compete on a world stage.
