Welcome to IYPT
Message from the President
IYPT is about getting students to do real research. It sets open ended research tasks that can challenge students at different levels and require them to present their work and defend it against criticism!
>IYPT is a unique educational experience!

Mr Alan Allinson, President IYPT (2nd from right) with AuScience Committee
I am a simple high school physics teacher and became involved with this tournament while looking for something to challenge my brightest students.
Despite a disappointing first attempt at competition the value of the whole process became very apparent. Students become physicists!
If you are looking to improve physics education in your school or your country - IYPT is the way!
My belief in the process led to my forming the IYPT Australia Challenge as a qualifying competition, now in its ninth year with entries from several States, and later this year the first Junior Young Physicists' tournament, JYPT.
The process is the most important part. The problems are now used as part of the physics curriculum for all the senior physics students in my school(about 150 students each year conduct real research). This has now been repeated in many other schools across the country.
All students benefit from trying to solve difficult problems and all can produce creative solutions. And the vast majority relly enjoy it!
Students don't leave the lab!
In 1998 when Australia joined IYPT there were 18 teams from 16 countries. Australia hosted the first IYPT away from Europe in 2004 with 26 teams from 25 countries. The IYPT family is now around 36 countries and YPT competitions are held around the world.
Please join us!
Thank you,
Mr Alan Allinson, President IYPT - aallinson@iyptaustralia.org
